I am actually not very political myself. I have been told by people in the church that I am liberal (I am not) especially those with the if you are not with me then you are my enemy mindset (sith lords). I see things in both parties that are incompatible with the gospel. I speak out far more against Republican things that are incompatible because I run into them all the time because it is the dominant culture.
Republican culture is by far the dominant political culture in the church and because of biases that mix together in weird ways like: In group Out Group Bias: https://youtu.be/OVRV2csdhF8 And Confirmation Bias: https://youtu.be/GBi5Cj21b1I People start to see Republicanism as Christianity and often lift it above actual Christianity.
Because it is the dominant political culture and because politics has become an obsession in society people start to see republican culture as the same as church culture. This has some very negative effects:
1. Members believe and act in ways that are unacceptable to the gospel because it is acceptable to their politics (see below)
2. Members who are not republican feel like they don’t belong and are often told that they are not good members
3. Kids who grow up in the gospel think they need to be republican in order to be a good member and many leave because of this
4. Because of how politics has intertwined with science many kids think they have to shun science to become a good member and many leave because of this
I’m okay with you being republican as long as you can remember the following things
1. Your politics and your religion are not entirely compatible
2. We should always put Jesus before all other philosophies so remember the things below:
Things that you have forgotten that are contrary to the gospel because your politics encourages them:
Judging the Poor
What is good for capitalism is morally good
Judging people by their wealth: rich people are good, poor people are lazy
Taking advantage of people because that is a “fair” business practice
Hating people of other groups especially liberals, atheists, and people of the Lgbtqa community
Your hatred of illegal immigrants is particularly galling because they are often the epitome of the poor and downtrodden: (I will have a future post on this)
Plus the way that some of you idolize Donald Trump is freaking weird man.
