How to discipline without anger or coddling: 3 Pixar Shorts that show how.
Most people think of discipline as punishments like taking away a phone or yelling, but effective discipline means good teaching:
Minds go blank when I ask parents and teachers how to discipline without using either rewards or punishments.
I show my class these three Pixar shorts to give them some better ideas.
1. Piper: https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=KCf56Tb0CP8
The baby bird wants to be coddled by being fed, but the mother refuses to do so and puts the child in an environment where it has to learn how to get its own food
It shows that teaching without punishments or anger can be done without coddling at the same time.
2. Lou- https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=zIL0vSNx8Xg
A bully learns empathy from a magical creature made up of lost and found items.
It shows that learning empathy through action is the best way to teach kids how to treat each other. It prioritizes teaching over punishments again.
3. Boundin': https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=VkUi4qdZStQ
A sheep learns how to bounce back from negative emotions by a bouncing Jackalope
Again, teaching over rewards and punishments.
Let me know your favorite movies or shorts that show similar skills. Maybe I can use them.
