Okay, people, let’s do this one last time [in Spiderman voice]:
Yes, I’m an Autistic and ADHD High School Relationships teacher.
Yes, the kids think I’m weird (that’s because they’re weird, I’m normal).
Yes, I’m really good at relationships, and I’m autistic at the same time (didn’t see that one coming, did ya).
Yes, I’m good at seeing and understanding people (didn’t see that one coming either?).
Yes, my autism is part of the reason why I’m so good at seeing people [mind blown].
Yes, I’m going to teach all of you how to understand how to see people (Wait, what? You’re thinking, “I see people just fine.” Nope, you don’t.)
Yes, I’m going to teach you all about relationships as well (once you understand people, this comes easier).
Yes, it’s for free on my social media and blog posts (really no catch or subscription).
I’ve been teaching for 25 years as a high school relationships and child psychology teacher. I’ve had many people ask me to make what I teach available outside of the school, so I’m ready to do that.
While your mind is blown, let me explain why I can see things:
There is a story about a fish that swims past two other fish, asking them, ‘How’s the water, boys?’ One fish turns to the other fish and says ‘What the heck is water?’
Water is innately understood in the behavior of fish; they swim in it like it’s nothing, so they see it like it’s nothing, meaning they don’t really see it at all. An innate understanding of water allows them to swim, but it also blinds them to the water. As an autistic, I’m a fish without an innate understanding of water. It made it so I couldn’t swim like the other fish. In order to swim, I had to study water. In some ways, my swimming is still a little awkward, but I can see the water. I can see it in a way that other fish can’t. I see the currents and the movements and how they affect me and the other fish. Most are completely unaware of the water and unaware of the movements that the currents cause.
The thing I can teach you is to become a people watcher. Learn to watch people like an autistic masker, like you are trying to understand them for the first time. Autistic masking is the process of studying people so we can copy and act like a neurotypical. Many of us have done this without realizing it. (If you want to understand autistic masking, check out the YouTube video below. I made on it. I use a lot of movie and TV clips in my teaching.) Most of us are trying to stop the copying because of the health problems but there is a lot to be learned from what I've learned.
A typical brain takes a lot of shortcuts when understanding people. This conserves energy, making it so your understanding of someone is overgeneralized at best and completely wrong at worst.
So if you are interested in learning (and if you aren’t, then you really should be, understanding people is one of the most important skills), then do the following things:
1) Follow my Facebook page here so you get each post.
2) Check out my website blog here so you can see each post. Honestly, things are going to look a little better on my blog as it’s easier to post all the pictures and videos on my website:
3) If you want a better understanding of what I teach and how I teach it, check out my YouTube videos on my website here:
4) Invite your friends and family to learn also.
If you are wondering why I am doing this (What’s the catch?)
1) I love to teach, unfortunately, due to health problems related to my autism, it’s become increasingly difficult to do it in person, although I still do (starting my 26th year in high school in August)
2) What this world needs the most is an increased ability to see each other
3) I’m writing a book, or rather, I’ve written it, that I hope you all will want to read called: “Seeing Humanity: Learning to see From an Autistic High School Teacher.” It hasn’t been published yet, but I’ll let you know as we get closer.
4) I’ve got so many stories and experiences that will help teach these things that they can’t all fit in a book anyway, so let’s get started here.
But please share with your family and friends, everyone needs to learn this stuff that I’m going to teach.

Our understanding of Autism has grown significantly in the last few years. There are a lot more people who fall under the umbrella of autism but who have been missed because they have learned how to camouflage or "mask" some of its traits.
In this video, I share some of my personal experiences in masking my autism (even from myself)
